Anyone who has tried to buy a new MacBook Pro recently will know that getting one delivered will take a number of weeks, sometimes months. That’s because Apple has just one company building them and it’s suffering from ongoing manufacturing issues as a result of COVID-19.

Now, a new report claims that the company is considering moving its factory to cope.

According to DigiTimes, Quanta Computer is considering moving its MacBook Pro production to a factory in Chongqing, China. This comes after recent COVID-19 restrictions have caused issues in Shanghai, where the computers are currently being built.

Apple itself has already admitted that disruption caused by COVID-19 is an issue for its suppliers, saying so during an earnings call last month.

Quanta Computer is currently the only company that is building the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro for Apple. Those ordering its two high-end portable machines are facing long waits for delivery which is a concern — these machines were heralded as a return to form for Apple thanks to the inclusion of multiple ports and speedy M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The new 120Hz variable refresh displays are also impressive.

Unfortunately, none of that matters when you can’t build the computers quickly enough to meet demand — something that seems unlikely to be improved quickly.
