MALTA – GlobalFoundries is moving forward with its plans to build a second computer chip factory at its Fab 8 campus in Saratoga County.
The company was originally scheduled to present preliminary plans of the new factory to the towns of Malta and Stillwater late last year, but those presentations were delayed; the company said it needed more time to work on its designs.
However, GlobalFoundries representatives are now scheduled to speak before the Malta planning board Tuesday at 5 p.m. to show concept designs for the project. About 85 percent of the new facility will be in Malta, with the rest located in Stillwater.
A GlobalFoundries spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
GlobalFoundries employs 3,000 people at Fab 8, which is also the company’s headquarters. The company has been planning a second factory, or fab, for years. The new facility would be highly automated and only require 1,000 employees.
Although GlobalFoundries has not revealed the cost of the new plant, chip fabs generally cost between $5 billion and $10 billion to build and equip.
GlobalFoundries is a so-called foundry that makes chips for customers that don’t have their own chip manufacturing operations. Its customers include Advanced Micro Devices, IBM, Qualcomm, Ford Motor Co. and the Department of Defense.
